I left the bar with a mixture of feelings swirling in my head. Greening’s earlier words of, ‘I doubt you can handle it by yourself,’ were making sense to me now. But I was a stubborn son of a bitch. Not to mention, these folks didn’t know I was onto them yet.

I stopped on the spot where Cynthia Parsons had been stabbed and stared at the scrubbed chalk. Shaking my head, I put a cigarette between my lips and lit it. This was no way for a woman to die, but I couldn’t help wondering what she was doing on the docks. As far as I knew, she had no reason to be down here.

Sighing, I stuffed the lighter back in my pocket and blew out a puff of smoke. My eyes drifted over the water, which was calm and clear in the morning sun. Something at the bottom caught the light and glinted at me.

I focused on it and froze.

The knife rested in the mud, discarded just like the fisherman had said. There was something else next to it, but I couldn’t make out what it was. I looked around quickly, seeing nobody was on the dock. Stepping onto a nearby boat, I grabbed a long-handled net and rushed back to the walkway. I fished out the knife, the strange object in a clump of mud, and tipped them out onto the wooden boards.

I put the net back and then inspected my find. The knife was of some strange design, probably a martial arts weapon, but I didn’t know what. Of course, the blade was clean, but I wrapped it in a nearby discarded cloth and shoved it inside my jacket. When I found the object and wiped the mud from it, I got another, bigger surprise.

It was a bank card. The name stamped on it was George Parsons.

I looked up, dumbfounded, as I realised I was no closer to solving this puzzle, and another massive piece had fallen into my lap.
